There are seasons in motherhood—and in life—when our hearts feel stretched beyond what we thought we could bear. We experience joy and sorrow, abundance and lack, hope and disappointment. In those moments, we may wonder how to remain gentle when life feels anything but.
The woman described in Proverbs 31 is not praised because her life is easy. She is praised because her strength is rooted in her reverence for God. She trusts Him through every season.
How Do We Stay Soft In the Midst of Pain?
I have seen seasons of plenty, and I have seen seasons of lack.
Yet through both, I am learning that contentment does not come from perfect circumstances. It comes from choosing to remain open to Love.
It comes from returning to the center of my heart, returning to the face of Love—Jesus Christ.
Life is always changing. Every season brings something new to learn, something to surrender, and something that shapes us into who God is calling us to become.
Joy is still possible, even in seasons of hardship.
The work is keeping our hearts open.
Tender.
Humble.
Soft.
Open to the One who is Love itself.
Finding God in the Silence
There are moments when pain causes us to ask:
“Why, God?”
“What are You doing?”
“What purpose could this possibly serve?”
Those questions are not signs of weak faith. They are invitations to seek Him more deeply.
When the answers do not come immediately, we have a choice. We can allow bitterness to take root, or we can continue seeking His presence.
Find Him there.
Lean into the grief.
Lean into the uncertainty.
Lean into His love.
Often, God meets us most intimately in the places we would rather avoid.
The Beauty of Contrast
Without sorrow, would we recognize the fullness of joy?
Without pain, would peace carry the same sweetness?
Without darkness, would we appreciate the light?
Life is filled with contrasts, and through them God teaches us to see His faithfulness more clearly.
Each season has its purpose.
Winter prepares the earth for spring.
The seed must be buried before new life appears.
Harvest comes only after seasons of waiting.
Even the difficult chapters are part of God’s beautiful design.
Love is Woven Into Everything
Here is the quiet truth God continues to reveal to me:
Love is everywhere.
It is present in birth and in death.
In beginnings and endings.
In the flower, the tree, the fruit, and the seed.
In the birds that soar overhead.
In the comforting shade of an old tree.
In the warmth of the summer sun and the crisp breeze of autumn.
Even in winter’s frost, God is preparing creation for renewal.
Every season reflects His love.
Every season has purpose.
Even the ones we would never choose for ourselves.
The Secret of the Proverbs 31 Woman
So how does the virtuous woman trust?
She keeps her eyes on her Lord.
Her confidence is not found in herself, her abilities, or her circumstances.
Her strength comes from looking beyond them all to Jesus.
He is the Author and Perfecter of our faith.
Everything we have is His gift.
Every victory belongs to Him.
Every reason for hope is found in Him.
There is no room for pride when we realize how completely we depend upon His grace.
Our boast is not in ourselves, but in the One who has done it all.
A Prayer
Dear Lord,
Teach me to keep my heart soft when life feels hard.
Help me remain open to Your love in every season.
When I cannot understand Your ways, give me the courage to trust Your heart.
May my home be filled with kindness, my words with wisdom, and my life with quiet confidence because my eyes remain fixed on You.
Strengthen me to love well, trust deeply, and walk faithfully wherever You lead.
Amen.
